Prologue
Her mind slipped in and out of memories as her life slowly faded. Like a dying flame, her mind burned out into nothing. The pain was not in the wound itself but the scar of leaving her daughter behind. A tear cascaded down her cheek as she took another look at the bundle in her arms.
"I know that one day you will make a good life for yourself. Years from now you will be accepted. I will watch over you from the clouds. You are safe, little one."
The mother kissed the forehead with burning eyes and set the baby down on the porch in front of the bulky double doors.
She descended down the steps and hugged herself. Making an abrupt stop, she took one last glance at her child. Smiling weakly, her form disappeared into the gloomy, uninviting forest. 'We will meet again, little one.'
